Citizenship for Amerasian Act (혼혈인 시민권 법안)

The first project that KAWAUSA will address is a bill in the US House of Representatives (HR 3987, Citizenship for Amerasian Act) which calls for the amendment of the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide for the automatic acquisition of citizenship by individuals born in Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Kampuchea, or Thailand after 1950 and before October 22, 1982, who were fathered by U.S. citizens. The bill was introduced to the House on March 17, 2004 by Representative Lane Evans. KAWAUSA is sponsoring a petition drive to persuade House Representatives to vote on passage of HR 3987.

The term Amerasian is not a synonym for Asian-American. An Asian-American is so by process of naturalization and/or immigration to America from their Asian country of ethnicity. In contrast, Amerasians share a singular dilemma in that they share a lack of identity in both their country of ethnicity and in America . As such, they are often ridiculed and discriminated against in both counties. This bill will allow for the automatic citizenship to their American birthright thus embracing the rights and benefits that we all share as American citizens.
